A distributor is an integral component within the ignition system of an internal combustion engine. Its primary function is to accurately direct high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs, ensuring the ignition occurs in the correct firing order. The introduction of the first dependable battery-operated ignition system can be credited to Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co. (Delco) in 1910, where Charles Kettering led its development. This ignition system, known as a marvel of its time, was initially implemented in the Cadillac automobile.
